Flashback: Maxine Waters revealed Obama’s ‘secret database’ that had ‘everything on everyone’
As congressional Republicans prepare to release a House Intelligence Committee report that paints former President Barack Obama as a “vengeful narcissist” who sought to punish his political enemies with the efficiency of a Russian KGB operative, a 2013 statement from Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) has resurfaced that supports the image of Obama as a heavy-handed tyrant.
Waters’ odious remarks came during a 2013 interview with journalist Roland Martin as the pair were discussing the future of the Democratic Party post-Obama. The California liberal lauded Obama’s efforts at establishing a “database [that] will have information about everything on every individual.”
Just five months after the Martin interview, Obama was exposed by NSA leaker Eric Snowden for operating a massive government surveillance program which targeted just about every American to ever use a cellular or communicate from the internet. The Washington Post described the program as a massive expansion of President George W. Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program.
Yet, Americans were ignorant of this program at the time of Waters’ interview, explaining why the implications of her remarks were never addressed by the mainstream media. The discussion turned to the database seemingly without provocation. Speaking about Obama’s last term in office, Martin said that Democratic lawmakers “better get what you can while he’s there because, look come 2016, that’s it.”
Watch the exchange below:
“The President has put in place an organization with the kind of database that no one has ever seen before in life,” Representative Maxine Waters told Roland Martin on Monday. “That’s going to be very, very powerful,” Waters said.
In response, Waters’ began her cryptic monologue with very few interruptions from Martin:
The President has put in place an organization with the kind of database that no one has ever seen before in life. That’s going to be very, very powerful. That database will have information about everything on every individual on ways that it’s never been done before and whoever runs for President on the Democratic ticket has to deal with that. They’re going to go down with that database and the concerns of those people because they can’t get around it. And he’s [President Obama] been very smart. It’s very powerful what he’s leaving in place.”
The ramifications of Waters’ comments were compounded by events on Capitol Hill this week. The House Intelligence Committee released a memo to the rest of their colleagues in Congress which alleged that Obama may have turned U.S. Intelligence agencies into his own partisan political enforcers.
Although lawmakers are currently forbidden from discussing the contents of the memo, sources close to the House-led investigation say that the report reviews Obama’s use of FISA surveillance against his political enemies. After viewing the memo in a classified setting, Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) said, “You think about, ‘is this happening in America or is this the KGB?’ That’s how alarming it is.”
Similarly, former congressional candidate Dan Bongino tweeted:
Take it to the bank, the FBI/FISA docs are devastating for the Dems. The whole image of a benevolent Barack Obama they’ve disingenuously tried to portray is about to be destroyed. The real Obama, the vengeful narcissist, is going to be exposed.
Congressional Republicans have long surmised that Obama used an uncorroborated dossier collected on the Trump campaign to authorize federal warrants against his top aides and associates. Some lawmakers have suggested that the entire Russia-Trump collusion investigation is based upon opposition research funded by Democrats and corroborated by Russian operatives.
Poor choice of words?
If Waters was not referring to an elaborate political surveillance apparatus established by Obama (admittedly, this would be a strange forum for Waters to breach the subject), she may have been alluding to a complex political mailing system used to provide details on potential donors and fund-raising resources.
Another explanation for Waters odious description could be that she was referring to efforts within the DNC to use big data to target voter preferences and behaviors.
The data collection that Democrats were feeding into statistical models around the time of Waters statement were groundbreaking enough to catch the attention of the MIT Technology Review, who wrote an article on the subject exploring Obama’s use of this technology to rally voters in 2012.
Yet Waters’ inexplicable word choice remains troubling. Why does she talk about Obama possessing “information on about everything on every individual.” Furthermore, why are Democrats “going to go down with that database?”
Either something truly underhanded was happening under the Obama administration involving data mining and public surveillance, or Ms. Waters’ was just carelessly droning on during her interview, giving little thought to the substance of her wording. In either case, the consequences are frightening for America.
