Former Fox News superstar Megyn Kelly is currently enduring a difficult transition to NBC, as the network welcomed her onto the third hour of the coveted Today Show morning television franchise last month.

The change of jobs has not just been unsettling for Kelly, however. A Today Show informant is reporting that with Kelly in the 9 a.m. EST slot, ratings for the franchise are down 32 percent from where they stood just one year ago.

What will this mean for the future of her career?

The Kelly effect

The source reports that the entire morning show programming, which is hosted by a varying cast during its four-hour weekday running, has suffered as a result of her hiring. The same source told PageSix:

Not only are ratings plummeting since Megyn Kelly joined the Today franchise, but the numbers show Kelly’s lead-in has also affected Kathie Lee [Gifford] and Hoda Kotb’s show, which follows straight afterwards.

While Kotb is said to have tolerated Kelly’s presence without complaint, Gifford’s response to the suggested 29 percent ratings decline experienced during her fourth hour broadcast was described as “livid.”

Additionally, NBC may be implementing damage control measures after word was leaked that other cast members were furious with their new co-host, and an unidentified source reported that Kelly was forced to eat lunch alone after receiving the “cold shoulder” from other television personalities.

Show stopper

Responding to this rumor and the declining ratings, another NBC insider explained away the show’s abysmal performance, contending that Kelly has bounced back with her “highest ratings yet in the key demographic on Monday.”

Next, the “informant” addressed the lonely lunchroom gossip:

Everyone knows that ratings fluctuate at the start of a new show, and there has been nothing but support for Megyn from all of the Today Show hosts. They have each taken her out to lunch – Kathie Lee just took her to lunch today.

Fish out of water

Still, Kelly’s transition from Beltway scandal-monger to bantering daytime diva has been likened to an awkward display of a fish out of water, gasping for attention and relevance outside of her dwindling fan base.

The celebrity news outlet Jezebel has even capitalized on the entertainment value of watching Kelly humiliate herself every morning by cataloguing the host’s daytime escapades in a daily segment called “Megyn Kelly Today, Today,” which highlights the host’s cringeworthy demeanor via play-by-play.

Fortunately for viewers watching from home, Kelly can be dismissed with the press of a button. And by the looks of her declining ratings, it appears that former Today Show fans are choosing to do so with increasing regularity.
