BREAKING: CNN Busted Airing Fake News on Live TV Josh Hallett / CCL

President Donald Trump called CNN “very fake news” two months ago during an interview with the network’s White House correspondent Jim Acosta, and the slogan has been used against the network ever since the exchange.

While CNN claims Americans “trust them now more than ever,” they have been busted — again — for peddling fake news. CNN host Jake Tapper aired a “National Enquirer cover” promising scandalous details about Ted Cruz. The only problem? It was a fake.

Literally fake news

Tapper, host of CNN’s The Lead, aired a segment on Friday covering MSNBC Morning Joe co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski’s claim that Trump tried to blackmail them with an article in the National Enquirer.

CNN ran a National Enquirer cover involving the scandal about Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and his wife, Heidi Cruz, Page Six reported.

The magazine cover — which was headlined, “Heidi Cruz: Betrayed by Cheating Husband!” and suggested there were details on a “sordid threesome, sleazy love letters and sensational photo proof” — is literally fake news.

According to Page Six’s sources at the National Enquirer, the fake news cover “has never appeared on the National Enquirer.”

Page Six noted:

We’re told the network is taking the matter seriously, and that it has been referred to the [network’s] standards and practices department for review.

Tapper’s segment was in response to a series of tweets from Trump on Thursday, just one day prior, where Trump said “low I.Q.” Brzezinski was “bleeding badly from a face-lift” during a meeting with Trump at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago. Scarborough, Brzezinski’s fiance, claims Trump wanted an apology in exchange for getting the Enquirer to stop the planned hit piece.

Actions have consequences

It will now be even more difficult for CNN to argue they are a legitimate news organization rather than political operatives peddling a biased agenda.

Here are a few examples of what has happened to CNN just in the last week:

  • CNN retracted a story and fired three employees for publishing a false hit piece connecting Trump to Russia
  • A producer admitted the network has been pushing the Russia narrative for ratings
  • Commentator Van Jones confessed that the Russia narrative he has been pushing is a “nothingburger
  • Another producer belittled Trump supporters while admitting the network has a strong bias against the president
  • Jake Tapper’s program ran a fake news cover in order to link Trump to using a gossip magazine to run hit pieces against foes he disagreed with.

Has CNN finally lost all credibility? It’s hard to argue otherwise with this kind of evidence.
