Former-President Barack Obama doubled the national debt, his administration targeted conservative organizations with the IRS, and he bombed seven nations continuously throughout his tenure.
If that wasn’t enough, a new report found that the Obama family also cost taxpayers more than $114 million for his travel and family vacations; whether it was in Aspen, Palm Springs, Charlottesville or Salem.
According to Judicial Watch, a government watchdog organization, taxpayers were billed $114,691,322.17 for President Obama’s and his family’s various vacations and campaign stops in his eight years as president. The group also calculated President Donald Trump and his family’s vacations as of mid-July.
U.S. Taxpayers Billed Millions for Obamas’ Vacations
Judicial Watch submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request and two FOIA lawsuits to the Department of the Air Force and the Secret Service to obtain records relating to former-President Obama’s and President Trump’s travel expenses.
The latest batch of documents covered the Obama vacations between 2014 and 2016, which was more than $9 million. Travel expenses for the Obamas total nearly $115 million.
On the weekend of February 14, 2014, two Obama family trips – the First Lady’s vacation in Aspen with her daughters and the president’s golfing trip to Palm Springs – cost taxpayers about $272,000. This included $230,000 in hotels and $15,000 in car rentals.
When Michelle traveled to North Carolina to campaign for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, Air Force expenses reached just under $41,000. The C-40C military jet operated at $5,312 per hour.
Other Air Force and Secret Service records highlighted that the former president’s annual trips to Chicago cost roughly $7.4 million. His post-presidency expenses have also been immense, reaching close to $2 million in hotels, vehicle rentals, air and rail travel, and Secret Service overtime pay.
With Obama continuing to deliver speeches for $400,000 paychecks, it is likely U.S. taxpayers will still foot his travel bill.
Trump Family Also Spending Millions on Travel
For the Trumps, travel expenses stand at $10,381,792.35 as of July 16.
Between May 5th and 8th, President Trump flew on a C-32A military jet that cost a total of $224,765.80. To celebrate his 100th day in the Oval Office, the president flew to a rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania that cost $156,618. His June 9 to 11 trip to Bedminster came with a price-tag of $199,322.
The First Lady has charged the taxpayers for travel, including a July 14 to 16 flight to Bedminster. This cost a little more than $22,000.
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton was not pleased with the degree of difficulty required to obtain these records. He said in a statement:
It shouldn’t require federal lawsuits to to prod the Secret Service and Air Force to produce information about the costs of presidential travel – whether the travel is necessary or not, it’s a massive amount of money. We will continue to monitor this spending while taxpayers continue to pay the bills for presidential travel.
