REPORT: Here’s the REAL Reason Leftists Wanted the Paris “Treaty”

June 7, 2017

President Trump announced the United States is leaving the Paris Accords. While the move spurred instant backlash on the left, that outrage has nothing to do with protecting the environment.

The Paris Agreement is an Obama-era abuse of power that violated the Constitution and does nothing to help the environment. So why was it so important to the left? The answer is simple — It was a crude attempt to bypass Congress and redistribute wealth.

No standards, consistent metrics, or enforcement mechanisms

The largest loophole in the Paris Agreement is the total lack of uniform rules countries must obey. Every country voluntarily claims to set “standards” they “promise” to support, but none of the tests they use have to be the same year-to-year.

Governments make up rules as they go along; which results in miraculously better numbers than expected. The best example is China: They’re the worst polluter on the planet, and they receive glowing reviews under the Paris Agreement for maintaining the status quo.

The dirty secret in the Paris Accords is that countries like China are using it to hide their extensive pollution. While they lie and spin their numbers, they get favorable reviews from climate activists because China signed the Paris Treaty.

Further, there’s no enforcement mechanism. If a country fails to meet a standard, it faces no penalties; just the “shame” of the international community.

So far, the only country “shamed” by the international community is the United States.

The United States does not misrepresent numbers to make it look better by contrast. This fact should underline the utter hypocrisy of the left claiming China is a global leader on the environment.

If you eliminated the Paris Agreement completely, it wouldn’t even move the needle on climate change. In other words, climate advocates are giving glowing reviews to the worst polluters and shaming the cleanest countries.

The resulting deal is one that allows the world to blame America for failing on climate change while smugly hiding behind bogus figures. In America, the agreement is used as a political hammer by leftists to push their policies while claiming America is a failure.

Trump isn’t backing out of the treaty — America was never legally a part of it

People regard the Paris Agreement as a treaty. It has all the tokens of a treaty, but under U.S. law, it is not a constitutional agreement.

Under the Constitution, the Senate must vote on all treaties before the U.S. can participate. The President can negotiate a treaty, but the Senate, not the President, must decide on whether America joins.

That never happened for the Paris Accords. President Obama unilaterally signed it and bypassed the entire constitutional process.

The Paris Agreement was never lawfully ratified, and never binding on America; which means President Trump isn’t truly backing out of anything. You can’t leave something you never joined.

President Trump is just recognizing the truth. The Paris Accord was never constitutionally ratified and shouldn’t be enforced on Americans as such.

President Obama’s enforcement of the Paris Accords was an outright abuse of power. He forced it on Americans by executive fiat — a breach of the Constitution.

The Paris agreement is wealth redistribution – not saving the environment

Christopher Horner, a fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, said the Paris Accords were “more about wealth redistribution than climate change.” The text of the agreement proves Mr. Horner right, as Section 3 says:

… The efforts of all Parties will represent a progression over time, while recognizing the need to support developing country Parties for the effective implementation of this Agreement.

The developed world, i.e. the United States, is expected to pay for other countries to “progress over time” on “climate-friendly policies.” There are no fraud and abuse checks, no regulations measuring progress, and no enforcement if they fail.

There’s a reason 147 countries entered the deal, and it’s not out of concern for the environment. America is expected to cut a check under the pretense of a “climate treaty” that doesn’t help the environment.

Why are leftists promoting a deal that doesn’t aid the environment and was unconstitutional from the start? The Paris Accords authorize them to tax Americans for billions of dollars to underwrite climate activist groups.

There are billions more dollars at stake. The Paris Deal is nothing more than a redistribution of wealth campaign by climate activists, as Ottmar Edenhofer, a UN IPCC scientist revealed:

…[O]ne must say clearly that we redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy. Obviously, the owners of coal and oil will not be enthusiastic about this. One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore…

Edenhofer said this YEARS ago about United Nations environmental policy. The Paris Accords fit these goals perfectly — it’s wealth redistribution masquerading as climate policy.

The left knows they can’t go to Congress and demand special taxes to pay for their activist organizations. So they used the Paris Accords to shoehorn in taxes that moved money to their preferred causes.

Even if you accept every underlying argument leftists give for pursuing any “green policy,” the Paris Accord FAILS all those goals. It doesn’t save the climate, emissions don’t go down, and the largest polluters face no penalties.

Treat the Paris Accord for what it is, a gross Constitutional violation taxing Americans under the guise of faux-green regulations. Trump leaving it ends an abuse of power and reestablishes the rule of law in America.
