California Gov. Gavin Newsom issues pardons to 3 immigrant felons to prevent deportation

October 21, 2019

For California Gov. Gavin Newsom, compassion for immigrants knows no bounds — even for felons.

The Democrat, who has proudly defined his policies in contrast to President Donald Trump’s, announced Friday that he is pardoning three immigrants convicted of felonies to protect them from deportation.

The immigrants, who are from Iran, El Salvador, and Cambodia, came to the U.S. legally as children before being convicted of their crimes and have already served their sentences, according to Breitbart. The governor’s pardon would erase their criminal records, bolstering their cases to stay in the country.

A second chance

Newsom has overseen an aggressive push to decriminalize and incentivize illegal immigration in his state amid a wider decarceral agenda to pardon felons, including murderers. In his latest showering of compassion, Newsom will grant clemency to three immigrants who committed violent crimes as teenagers and young adults.

Newsom has argued that the men have been rehabilitated and therefore should not have to face deportation, according to Fox News.

“The Governor regards clemency as an important part of the criminal justice system that can incentivize accountability and rehabilitation, increase public safety by removing counterproductive barriers to successful reentry, and correct unjust results in the legal system,” a statement from Newsom’s office reads.

The immigrants all came to the U.S. legally as children. 38-year-old Victor Ayala, who came to the U.S. from El Salvador when he was 2, was sentenced to probation for stealing from an electronics store and pushing a security guard when he was 21, according to the Sacramento Beehe also had previous misdemeanor charges for hit-and-run and theft.

Newsom will also pardon 42-year-old Iranian immigrant Arnou Aghamalian, who was convicted in 1999 for setting fire to an empty car owned by a nightclub owner when he was 22. He came to America as a refugee from Iran when he was 15.

The third immigrant to receive clemency is 41-year-old Cambodian immigrant Thear Seam, who was convicted of robbing a man’s backpack and wallet when he was 18, as well as helping a car thief evade police the next year. He came to America as a refugee from Pol Pot’s regime when he was 4 years old.

Chaos in California

For his part, Newsom has gone to great lengths to solidify his state’s reputation as a sanctuary for illegal immigrants — and criminals — in contrast to President Trump and his aggressively pro-rule of law, pro-law enforcement stances. In addition to the three pardons, the ultra-left wing governor also commuted two life sentences for men convicted of violent crimes, making them eligible for parole.

Esdvin Flores, 44, has served 20 years in prison for robbing a woman at gunpoint when he was 23, while Jensen Ramos, 35, has served 17 years for attempted murder by shooting at a car fleeing a house party fight when he was 17. Newsom has said that both men have demonstrated that they have been rehabilitated.

Newsom also pardoned 59-year-old Curtis Reynolds, convicted of six drug felonies including possession for sale between 1998 and 2003, the Bee reported. Newsom has argued that the man has since changed and has committed himself to helping those struggling with addiction.

As Breitbart notes, New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, has also proven to be a trendsetter in making tolerance for violent crime and illegal immigration the de jure policy in his state. Cuomo pardoned seven illegal immigrants with criminal records in July 2018 to help them avoid deportation, according to Fox.

Just as in New York, the purpose of law enforcement in ultra-left wing California is apparently to let loose as many criminals as possible — even as housing and homelessness crises have reduced the quality of life in places like Los Angeles, where the black plague has been rumored to return. Talk about doing things backward.
