Former First Lady Michelle Obama was making America healthy again, whether they wanted it or not, but like other initiatives the previous administration touched, her efforts were a disaster. In addition to leaving kids hungry and dissatisfied, the “food guru” who advised Obama’s school lunch program has been arrested for defrauding the school lunch program.
According to The Los Angeles Times, David Binkle, a so-called food pioneer among school nutrition proponents, has been charged with conflict of interest, embezzlement and several other crimes. He is accused of stealing $65,000 from the children’s lunch program for his private consulting firm and his pockets.
The man who advised Michelle Obama
One of Obama’s key initiatives during her time as First Lady was to combat childhood obesity. She argued that the first step towards this project was to provide children with better lunches at school.
To achieve this goal, Obama hired Binkle, former director of food services for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Under his watch, the school district served about 700,000 meals every day, and the meals consisted quinoa salads, vegetarian curries and pad Thai noodles, which replaced corn dogs and chicken nuggets.
David Binkle was a celebrated figure, was praised by the White House and even appeared on Tedx Talks. But beneath his successful exterior, Binkle was allegedly a fraudster.
Prosecutors allege that Binkle embezzled approximately $65,000 of taxpayer money into his private consulting firm as well as into his bank account.
The professional chef was in court on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to 15 felony counts. Binkle posted $220,000 bail and will return to court in October. If convicted, he could serve up to 15 years in prison.
The school district was not pleased. It said in a statement:
While recognizing that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, the charges against Mr. Binkle are extremely upsetting as they do not reflect the professionalism, ethics and character we expect of all L.A. Unified employees.
Michelle Obama’s failed Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act
The First Lady may have had good intentions. But, like the old adage goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
In 2010, Obama launched the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, a one-size-fits-all policy that intended to cut calories, lower fat and improve nutrition. Similar to other government policies, the scheme took a collective approach rather than an individual.
Everyone is different, and children have various needs: some students are fat, some students are skinny; some students are athletic, some are sedentary; some students have a strong metabolism, some have a weak metabolism. As some of the images shared on social media show, not all students are not going to be satisfied with quinoa salad, corn on the cob and half of a kiwi.
The $11 billion school lunch program was a blunder, and it didn’t solve anything. In fact, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), 48 out of 50 states had difficulty complying with the mandate as students threw their food in the garbage and staged boycotts and schools faced higher lunch costs. That isn’t a sign of success.
However, as with all the Obama-era policies, the media rejoiced in the fact that someone was finally waging a war on obesity. Only in the minds of leftists can a program that leaves kids hungry and costs taxpayers dearly be determined as a victory.
As John Nolte of The Daily Wire writes, “Democrats are gunna Democrat.”
