Rep. Ayanna Pressley joins protesters calling for Brett Kavanaugh’s impeachment

October 7, 2019

One year after the battle to confirm Brett Kavanagh nearly tore the country apart, leftists still haven’t accepted the conclusion of that dark chapter of American history.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), a member of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s infamous “Squad,” joined hundreds of progressive activists who assembled at the Supreme Court on Sunday to demand Kavanaugh’s impeachment, The Hill reports. The protests marked one year since Kavanaugh squeaked through a bloody nomination fight that nearly ended his career.

“Kavanaugh may have that seat —  for now — but what you, what we are fighting for is so much bigger than one insecure man blinded by his privilege,” Pressley said Sunday.

Democrats vowed to impeach Kavanaugh even before he was confirmed to the Supreme Court last year in an epochal Senate vote that came after weeks of agonizing, bone-scraping political high tragedy. One year later to the day, Pressley gathered outside the court with hundreds of women activists from the Women’s March, CPD Action, and Demand Justice to “reclaim the court.”

Among the crowd: Julie Swetnick, who infamously accused Kavanaugh of “gang rape” before walking back her allegations in a media interview, according to Newsweek. Swetnick, and the political opportunism of her then-lawyer Michael Avenatti (who is now facing prison time), has been blamed by some for damaging the left’s case against Kavanaugh.

But it all seemed to be water under the bridge for this group of activists, who praised Swetnick, saying, “We believe you.” Echoing criticism from last year that Kavanaugh was a privileged white male who was entitled to a seat he did not deserve, Pressley said that the seat rightfully belongs to the left, instead.

“Together we will raise our voices to mobilize our communities and to legislate our destiny. I believe in the power of us,” she said. “And our fighting didn’t end when Brett Michael Kavanaugh put on a robe, and our fighting won’t end until there is a real investigation and justice for survivors.”

Some protesters showed up wearing t-shirts disparaging moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins (ME), whose vote in favor of Kavanaugh helped seal his confirmation. Collins meticulously explained her reasoning in a lengthy speech, saying that the evidence against Kavanaugh did not meet a reasonable threshold, but her vote has made her persona non grata on the left.

No evidence? No problem

Considering Swetnick’s involvement, it seems that for radicals like Pressley, a lack of evidence to justify Kavanaugh’s impeachment is merely an afterthought. Pressley, who is among a fringe group of 13 House Democrats calling for Kavanaugh’s impeachment, introduced a resolution calling for the measure in September.

The resolution came despite the fallout of a “bombshell” New York Times article that renewed calls for Kavanaugh’s impeachment before imploding within 24 hours. 2020 Democrats ramped up calls to impeach Kavanaugh in the wake of the article, which forwarded a new allegation of sexual misconduct against the judge, before the Times issued a devastating, embarrassing correction admitting that the allegation was not substantiated by either the alleged victim or her friends.

The anti-Kavanaugh book that was previewed by the article has suffered dismal sales, according to The Washington Examiner, probably in no small part thanks to the bad press generated by the Times debacle. But for radicals like Pressley and Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), the article is proof that Kavanaugh lied under oath.

Indeed, for the far-left, facts should conform with moral imperatives — not the other way around. Everything revolves around being on the “right side of history,” as expressed by Pressley, who faced backlash over the summer when she rebuked minorities who do not want to be a “voice” for the progressive movement.

Collins has learned the harsh lesson, too, of the consequences that come with defying the left’s ambitions. As the country learned one year ago, the left has one principle: facts be damned, they want power — and they’re willing to destroy anyone who stands in the way of it.
