Report: Robert Mueller lied under oath about interviewing for role of FBI director

October 9, 2019

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Robert Mueller was vying for the then-open position of FBI director when he met with Trump in May 2017, just days before being appointed as special counsel.

Mueller denied this development in testimony before Congress this summer — but now, Fox News is reporting that Mueller lied under oath.

Mueller falls in his own perjury trap?

Government officials reportedly told Fox that documents show Mueller wanted the FBI director position. What’s more, government watchdog group Judicial Watch has obtained emails via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request that indicate Mueller knew he could be appointed to the role of special counsel if he didn’t become the FBI chief.

Then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions was apparently left out of the loop. In an email to Mueller on May 12, 2017, then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who had approached Mueller about the special counsel opportunity, according to The Washington Examiner, wrote: “The boss and his staff do not know about our discussions.”

According to Fox, this means “the president would not have known either.”

Lacking that knowledge, Trump met with Mueller in May 2017, and the president has repeatedly said that Mueller was seeking a job during that meeting — something Mueller pushed back against during his congressional testimony in July.

“My understanding was I was not applying for the job,” Mueller told Congress, according to The Washington Examiner. “I was asked to give my input on what it would take to do the job.”

“The most dishonorable conduct I have ever witnessed”

When pressed to clarify that he “didn’t interview to apply for the FBI director job,” Mueller replied: “That’s correct.”

Trump himself pushed back against that claim immediately, tweeting:

John Dowd, an attorney for the president, also had some harsh words for Mueller, calling his actions “the most dishonorable conduct I have ever witnessed.”

“Capt. Robert Mueller, USMC, sits in front of his commander-in-chief being interviewed for FBI director knowing he is going to investigate the president and never says a word,” Dowd lamented to The Washington Times

And if that wasn’t bad enough, Mueller went on to lie about it. It looks like President Trump was right all along.
