Left calls for Barr’s impeachment in wake of Federalist Society speech

November 18, 2019

On Friday, Attorney General Bill Barr gave a speech at the Federalist Society’s National Lawyers Convention — and after hearing what he had to say, many on the left are now calling for his impeachment, according to Inquistr.

“Immediately after President Trump won election, opponents inaugurated what they call ‘The Resistance’ and they rallied around an explicit strategy of using every tool and maneuver to sabotage the functioning of the executive branch,” Barr declared.

Barr also slammed Democrats for “waging a scorched-earth, no-holds-barred war” while simultaneously “shredding norms and undermining the rule of law.”

Politics as religion

In his speech Friday, Barr went on to underscore the divergent philosophies held by those on the right as opposed to those on the left.

“In any age, the so-called progressives treat politics as their religion,” he asserted. “Their holy mission is to use the coercive power of the State to remake man and society in their own image, according to an abstract ideal of perfection.

“Conservatives, on the other hand, do not seek an earthly paradise,” Barr explained. We are interested in preserving over the long run the proper balance of freedom and order necessary for healthy development of natural civil society and individual human flourishing.”

Outrage from the left

Not surprisingly, Barr’s remarks did not sit well with the primary subjects of his critique.

“This is so outrageously inappropriate for an AG to be saying. You are the head of the DOJ for all Americans not just the ones in the Federalist Society,” former federal prosecutor Mimi Rocah tweeted, adding that he should “start acting like it.”

Meanwhile, law professor and former political candidate Richard Painter accused Barr of making “another lunatic authoritarian speech,” comparing him to “the type of bare-knuckles lawyer the Church would have hired thirty years ago to cover up sex abuse cases.”

MSNBC contributor and Mother Jones Washington bureau chief David Corn tweeted: “As the top law enforcement official in the land, Barr should not engage in ideological warfare.”

New Jersey Democrat Rep. Bill Pascrell went even further, demanding that Barr be impeached. The congressman assailed Barr as “a liar and a fanatic [who] should be impeached and stripped of his law licenses” while calling the Federalist Society “a radical political group.” Pascrell also characterized the speech as “one of the most vicious partisan screeds ever uttered by a US cabinet officer.”

Removing Barr from office would require both a majority vote in the House of Representatives and a two-thirds majority in the Republican-controlled Senate, according to Newsweek. Fortunately for the attorney general, that certainly seems like a long-shot.
