Ilhan Omar deletes tweet accusing reporter of ‘distorting’ her words after audio tape proves otherwise
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) narrowly avoided being publicly condemned by Congress over recent remarks that many have labeled anti-Semitic and feigned ignorance when she was called out by politicians and pundits. But not even she could get out of this one.
After Omar accused a reporter of “distorting” remarks she made that were critical of former President Barack Obama, the journalist responded by pointing out that Omar’s own recording of the exchange proved that his reporting was accurate.
“I’m an Obama fan!”
Politico’s Tim Alberta earned the ire of the freshman congresswoman for quoting her as having said that Obama managed to dodge the consequences of his “bad policies” because he had a “pretty face.”
“We can’t be only upset with Trump… His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was,” said Omar, according to Alberta’s report. “And that’s not what we should be looking for anymore. We don’t want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile.”
After its release, Omar called Alberta’s report “Exhibit A of how reporters distort words.”
“I’m an Obama fan!” she promised. “I was saying how Trump is different from Obama, and why we should focus on policy not politics.”
“This is why I always tape my interviews,” she added before attaching a link to an audio file. But the recording didn’t line up with her claim.
“This is why I always tape my interviews”
“I think for many of us, we think of ourselves as Democrats. But many of the ways that our Democratic leaders have conducted themselves within the system is not one that we are all proud of,” Omar said in the recorded interview, which was transcribed by Fox News.
She went on to condemn Obama’s policies, including the “family separation or caging of kids” and the “droning of countries around the world.”
“You know, I will talk about the family separation or caging of kids and then people will point out that this was wrong – I mean this was Obama. And you know I’ll say something about the droning of countries around the world and people will say that was Obama,” she said. “And all of that is very true.”
She finished her train of thought by explaining why it was easier for Obama to avoid the criticism of his bad policies than it is for Trump:
And when we talk about waking people up from complacency, it’s to say that we can’t be only upset with Trump because he’s not a politician who sells us his policies in the most perfect way. His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was.
And that’s not what we should be looking for anymore. We don’t want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile, so that we can understand the kind of negative impact, or positive impact, they will have on us for generations.
“It’s beyond dispute”
Omar has since deleted her tweet claiming that Alberta “distorted” her words, but Alberta hasn’t let her off the hook just yet.
“Exhibit A of how politicians use the media as a straw man to avoid owning what they said,” Alberta tweeted. “Your tape…supports what I wrote 100 [percent]. So does my longer tape. It’s beyond dispute.”

Your tape…supports what I wrote 100%. So does my longer tape. It’s beyond dispute.
Next time, a phone call from your office before the Twitter ambush would be appreciated. https://t.co/eb2grgn5Cd

Indeed, it looks like Omar got caught debunking her own claim. Even Democrats can’t keep their crazy assertions straight anymore.
