Hillary Clinton: Tulsi Gabbard is ‘a favorite of the Russians’

October 21, 2019

After losing the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton was quick to accuse President Donald Trump of being a Russian puppet. Now, the former secretary of State has found her newest target.

In a podcast with Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe, Clinton said Democrat 2020 hopeful Tulsi Gabbard has been getting some help with her campaign from the Kremlin, Politico reports.

“She’s the favorite of the Russians,” Clinton said of Gabbard. “They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far.”

While Clinton didn’t mention the Hawaii congresswoman by name, Politico reports it was quite clear about whom Clinton was talking.

Russian assets

Gabbard is considered a long-shot for the Democrats’ 2020 nomination, barely garnering enough support in the polls to make it to last week’s televised primary debate, according to The New York Times. However, Clinton believes that Russians operatives “grooming” Gabbard “to be the third-party candidate.”

That is, if long-time Green Party candidate Jill Stein will step aside. “She’s also a Russian asset,” Clinton said.

Of course, Clinton could point to no evidence to support her assertions. But that’s never stopped her before.

Indeed, the former first lady continues to accuse Trump of working with Russia despite now-former special counsel Robert Mueller finding no proof of collusion or obstruction of justice by the president.

Democratic infighting

For her part, when Gabbard herself came across Clinton’s comments, she didn’t pull any punches. She wrote on Twitter:

Great! Thank you [Hillary Clinton]. You, the queen of warmongers, embodiment of corruption, and personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party for so long, have finally come out from behind the curtain.

From the day I announced my candidacy, there has been a…concerted campaign to destroy my reputation. We wondered who was behind it and why. Now we know — it was always you, through your proxies and…powerful allies in the corporate media and war machine, afraid of the threat I pose.

Gabbard concluded by calling on Clinton to take off the mask and jump in with both feet. “Don’t cowardly hide behind your proxies. Join the race directly,” Gabbard said.

Clinton spokesperson Nick Merrill responded by doubling down. “This is not some outlandish claim,” Merill told CNN, according to the Washington Examiner. This is reality. If the Russian propaganda machine, both their state media and their bot and troll operations, is backing a candidate aligned with their interests, that is just a reality, it is not speculation.”

As ridiculous as Clinton’s claims may seem, they are really only helping Trump’s cause ahead of 2020. The more the Democrats target each other, the less time they have to make up stories about President Trump — and the further from the White House they’ll be.
