Democrats hoping to impeach Trump have their sights set on Giuliani: Report
Democrats hoping to impeach Donald Trump are now targeting the president’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, according to a report from Politico. Dems apparently hope if they can find some wrongdoing on Giuliani’s part, they will be able to tie it directly back to Trump.
“Rudy Giuliani is Donald Trump, and Donald Trump is Rudy Giuliani,” House Intelligence Committee member Eric Swalwell (D-CA) said.
Part of the reason Democrats have decided to focus on Giuliani is that some Republicans have begun to make waves about a so-called “shadow diplomacy” Giuliani is said to have conducted on some issues, including the investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden’s involvement in Ukraine, according to Politico.
While Democrats seek to tie Trump to Giuliani’s activities, Republicans are doing the opposite and saying that Trump didn’t have direct knowledge of whatever his lawyer did regarding Ukraine.
When you assume…
Democrats have taken to assuming the worst of Trump and his lawyer in recent weeks as they take the plunge toward impeachment.
“I’m pretty sure they’re not just talking about the weather and their golf games,” Rep. Harley Rouda (D-CA) said about Giuliani and Trump’s frequent meetings and phone calls. “Especially when it’s also very clear from the evidence that President Trump directed members of the State Department to work directly with Giuliani in their efforts in Ukraine. So the nexus is there. There is no debating the facts.”
But more than a rabid game of connect-the-dots is needed to actually prove that Trump knew what Giuliani was doing in Ukraine and that he directed him to do it. In fact, more work still needs to be done to show that Giuliani actually did anything wrong in Ukraine.
Moreover, is it really illegal to use alternative channels to help conduct diplomacy, particularly when your administration is still riddled with Deep State operatives running their own anti-Trump agendas and working against the president whenever they think they can get away with it?
Trump sticks by his man
As of right now, Trump has not done what some Republicans are surely pushing him to do: throw Giuliani under the bus and save himself (if indeed he needs saving).
“He may seem a little rough around the edges sometimes, but he is also a great guy and wonderful lawyer,” Trump said Saturday.
While Rudy Giuliani is not worth losing his presidency over, Trump certainly knows there’s “no there there” in this situation. Democrats have thought they had Trump backed in a corner countless times since he was elected, but it always turns to be nothing when the facts come out.
If they even follow through on impeachment at this point, which is doubtful, it’s going to come off looking like the partisan political ploy that it is — and the American public may very well punish Democrats for their assumptions and presumptions by the time this is all over.
