Airport security thwarts attempt by Indian man to get into the US disguised as an 81-year-old
A 32-year-old Indian man was recently stopped by airport security after he attempted to disguise himself as an 81-year-old man to come to America, Newsweek reported.
Jayesh Patel tried to use a fake passport for a man named Amrik Singh to get through security at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, but his dyed-gray hair and beard didn’t match up with the lack of wrinkles on his face and elsewhere.
Patel rode in a wheelchair and tried to avoid eye contact with security personnel, but was stopped at the gate and looked over more carefully. Hemendra Singh of India’s Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) also said the man’s voice didn’t seem to match his age.
The screener also noticed that Patel had black roots underneath the gray-white hair, ABC News reported. Police officer Sanjay Bhatia told NDTV: “We’ve never seen a similar case at the Delhi airport before.”
Where is Bharat?
Patel finally told officers he was trying to get to New York City for a job but he couldn’t get a visa. Instead, he agreed to pay a man named “Bharat” nearly $42,000 when he got to the U.S.
Bharat had Patel see a makeup artist, who did his best to make Patel look 81 by dying his hair and giving him a turban and thick glasses. The disguise probably wasn’t worth what Patel would have paid, however, since it didn’t fool security.
Now, police in India are looking for Bharat and the makeup artist, but so far have not been able to find them.
For his part, Patel was handed over to immigration authorities. It’s doubtful he will be making it to America to take that job anytime soon.
A close call
Indira Gandhi International Airport, commonly known as Delhi Airport, is the 12th busiest airport in the world. Nearly 70 million passengers traveled through it in 2018.
With that figure in mind, it’s good to know that airport security works. What if Patel had been a terrorist trying to enter the U.S.?
On this day of remembering the terrorist attacks on the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001, we are well aware of what can happen when people with nefarious purposes sneak into the country.
New York City especially remembers it every single day.
